Artist in Residency

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCY

The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry is proud to welcome Jennifer Van Winkle as the first recipient of the Anne Darby Parker Artist-in-Residency program.

Jennifer Van Winkle is an installation artist, community arts choreographer and art activist.  She often creates spaces for people to go inside and art experiences for people to participate in.  Most recently she completed, the eXpedition, a site-specific, interactive installation which features recycled textiles and clothing for the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh during a 3 month residency.  Museum visitors could interact with the artwork from October 10, 2009 - January 10, 2010.  This is part of her new body of work begun in 2008, entitled, sustainable creativity: new experiences>reused materials, involves the creation of collaborative installations with communities and site-specific installations.  At the conclusion of the projects, the materials are put back into the recycling system (or nature) to have another “life” beyond contemporary art.

For three months, Jennifer conducted FREE hands-on workshops and classes Thursday - Saturday in the CML Art Room.  She also worked with a group of third and fourth graders from our partner school, Charleston Progressive Academy Wednesdays after school.  Jennifer's innovative project titled TREEscape is the centerpiece of the Museum's Summer 2010 exhibit and based on the Lowcountry icon, the Angel Oak Tree.   The activity center is a large tree design constructed from reclaimed wood, recycled textiles and clothing. Her intent is to encourage exploration of both space and imagination while planting the seeds of environmental awareness and stewardship.  Visitors will be able to slide, crawl and climb through spaces as well as hands-on activities.

Origin of the Artist in Residence Program

Anne Darby Parker has been an artist all her life. It was her imaginative vision and passion for arts education that founded the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry and will continue to inspire children and families for years to come. She is a native of Charleston, SC and resides on Sullivan’s Island with her husband and three children. Anne’s first exposure to the arts was through the lens of a camera where she found capturing the human spirit to be her passion. After years of photography, Anne made the transition from the camera to the paint brush. Her oil paintings reflect her deep Southern Lowcountry roots. Her photographs and works of art have been exhibited throughout South Carolina and Washington, DC. In addition to being CML Founder and Board Member, Parker is also a member of the Sullivan’s Island Plein Air Painters, the Charleston Artist Guild and is on the Board of the SC Arts Foundation.
