ignite a love of learning and help children in need
Your donation to Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry (CML) is a commitment to better education in South Carolina. Research indicates that access to play-to-learn experiences are vital to school readiness and early academic success. CML’s unique opportunities to engage in play foster cognitive, social, emotional, and fine and gross motor development in a safe environment. Learn more about our mission and community engagement.
Early Education Fund
It is vital for all young learners to have play-to-learn experiences to foster growth and development.
Brown Bags for STEM and Social Emotional Learning
Throughout the pandemic, CML provided thousands of brown bags with STEM activities to students so that our dynamic educational programs could be done safely.
We will continue the brown bag STEM initiative and, with funding, build on it by adding social emotional activity kits that help students.
CML Camp Scholarships
CML’s solution to the lack of free or reduced cost camp activities in the community is to provide camp scholarships to qualifying families, offering children a safe, creative environment where they can explore, learn and play.
Head Start and First Steps
CML is proud to partner with CCSD Head Start and Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester First Steps. We provide STEAM training to educators and students. Our impact has supported play-based, hands on learning activities that align with curriculum, support teachers, and encourage our youngest scholars to explore the topics they are learning in new, empowering ways.
Pop Up Tinker Shop
The Pop Up Tinker Shop gives us wheels that allow us to bring innovative and immersive learning through play to schools, community centers, churches, parks, and more across the Tri-county area. This enables us to share our hands-on learning activities, materials, and programs outside of the museum’s building.
Title 1 School Field Trips
Under-resourced Title 1 elementary schools receive a 50% discount on field trips to Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry.
Equity and Access Fund
Everyone deserves access to learning opportunities. CML offers robust programming, admission, and partnership opportunities to ensure every child can unlock their potential.

Free Family Fridays
Free Family Fridays offers FREE admission for everyone seven times a year and provides a pass to come back to CML, as well as a children’s book for each child. We welcome community partners to also attend so that families receive vital free services.
(This program has been paused during COVID due to limited capacity, but we hope to bring it back soon with the help of funders like you!)

Museums for All
Visitors with EBT, SNAP, WIC, and free or reduced lunch/breakfast can receive one day’s admission for up to 6 people for $1.
Every museum playdate is a gift, giving caregivers time to de-stress and breathe because they know the museum will provide:
- A chance to be curious: our exhibits and experiences keep children happily engaged and learning
- A chance to get messy: we have ALL the art supplies plus wood, hammers, and saws! (and we’ll sweep up the sawdust afterwards)
- A judgement free zone: CML welcomes children and families of all shapes, sizes, compositions, and backgrounds

Outreach
As a downtown Charleston museum, CML is acutely aware of the barriers our location presents to those who live outside of the downtown area. In order to adequately address the transportation issue, CML is working on bringing the power of playful learning to them!

Enrichment on the Go!
CML Education staff takes interactive, standards-based programming to the classroom when schools can’t make it to CML. Learn about our many engaging programming options here. CML staff will also design a custom program that suits that class’s individual needs.
FAM JAM
CML’s iconic annual event is our FREE community celebration of play! Bringing together dozens of partners, volunteers, and performers, we invite all families to come play and connect together. More than 6,000 families take us up on it each year! Event information can be found here as we get closer to the next FAM JAM.
