Assistant Facility Technician  

Part-time, non-exempt

Located in beautiful downtown Charleston, the Children’s Museum of Lowcountry is a non-profit children’s museum dedicated to engaging young children’s potential through experiences that spark imaginations and stimulate curiosity using the power of PLAY. 

The Assistant Facility Technician will be a key member of the operations team. The AFT will work closely with the Facility Technician and the entire operations team to help maintain our facility as a clean, safe, efficient, and innovative environment for children, their caregivers, and educators. The Assistant Facility Technician will employ cleaning service skills and light building maintenance to ensure a high-quality experience for everyone who visits the museum. 

This on-site role requires: 

  • Cleaning the museum floors and bathrooms 
  • Cleaning and maintaining museum exhibits 
  • Light Maintenance of the building 
  • Comfort with both indoor and outdoor settings 
  • Problem-solving and collaboration skills 
  • Experience using tools and janitorial equipment preferred  
  • Experience with building maintenance and safety desired but training will be provided 

The Children’s Museum is a small staff organization serving thousands of children, their caregivers, and educators. Our team members exhibit flexibility, a culture of support and teamwork, nimbleness, and co-leadership that have allowed us to remain mission-centered and continue reaching the community in new and unique ways throughout this challenging time. All team members can expect to be part of this work from time to time and should have a high comfort level being around small children. Reliable transportation and consistent attendance is required. 

The Assistant Facility Technician will report directly to the Exhibits and Facilities Coordinator. 

Work Hours: 

The Assistant Facility Technician role is a part-time position averaging 20-25 hours weekly. Due to the nature of this work, a unique and flexible schedule in collaboration with the Facilities team is possible including but not limited to early morning or late evening hours, weekend availability required. 

Compensation and Benefits: 

This position is offered at $17.25/hr.

Camp Counselor

Part-Time, Seasonal

Located in beautiful downtown Charleston, the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry is a nonprofit museum dedicated to engaging young children’s potential through experiences that spark imagination and stimulate curiosity using the power of PLAY.

CML is currently looking for applicants interested in working in an educational and playful nonprofit environment where children 4-10 years-old play and learn through our hands-on and engaging activities and exhibits. Camp Counselors are responsible for leading small groups in themed STEAM-based activities and Museum play while monitoring camper safety and behavior. For those who are interested in working with children and families and/or in the education field, working as a Camp Counselor provides valuable classroom management, and general education experience while working for a nonprofit.

Applicants likely to thrive in this environment will be energetic, self-directed, enthusiastic to learn and teach, friendly and customer-service driven. We are looking for employees who have a reliable schedule and are comfortable interacting with the public and small children. Prior job experience working with children is preferred. Primary job responsibilities include leading small groups in camp activities and Museum play, monitoring safety and behavior, and supervising teenage volunteers.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a reliable and consistent schedule
  • Must be able to complete related duties
  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug test

Skills and Experience:

  • Child care, education, and/or camp experience preferred
  • Strong communication skills to confidently explain information and converse with campers, colleagues, volunteers, and Museum visitors
  • Organizational skills to effectively keep on schedule and on task
  • Self-confidence to take the initiative of various tasks and projects
  • Achievement-motivated to work with CML to set and surpass realistic goals

Compensation is $14 per hour.

Visitor Services Associate


Part-Time

Located in beautiful downtown Charleston, the Children’s Museum of Lowcountry is a non-profit children’s museum dedicated to engaging young children’s potential through experiences that spark imaginations and stimulate curiosity using the power of PLAY.

Visitor Services Associates are the front line and the face of the museum, having interactions with all museum guests. CML is currently looking for applicants interested working in an educational and playful non-profit environment where children birth to 10 years old play and learn through our hands-on and engaging exhibits. Applicants likely to thrive in this environment will be energetic, self-directed, enthusiastic to learn and teach, friendly, and customer service driven. We are looking for employees who have a reliable schedule and are comfortable interacting with the public including small children. Prior job experience working with children is not a requirement but some of those skills translate well into the Visitor Services position. Primary job responsibilities include working at the front desk greeting customers, signing in members or taking admission payments, operating a cash register, general tidying of the museum throughout the day to maintain exhibit orderliness. Other duties could include deep cleaning projects in the morning and occasionally hosting weekend birthday parties and facilitating programs.

Requirements:

      • Must have reliable and consistent schedule.
      • Must be able to complete related duties.
      • Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
      • Must be able to lift 20lbs on a regular basis. This position may require sitting, standing, and/or walking and climbing stairs throughout the facility for extended periods of time on any workday.

Skills and Experience:

      • Childcare, education, customer service, cashier, retail experience.
      • Strong communication skills to confidently explain information and converse with customers of all ages.
      • Organizational skills to effectively process check-ins and other work as needed.
      • Self-confidence to take the initiative or various tasks and projects.
      • Achievement-motivated to work with the CML to set and surpass realistic goals.

Available Shifts: We are currently seeking multiple part-time employees to work a minimum of 15 hours/week. Set afternoon shifts during the week and weekend.
